Description
The absolute highlight of the region's annual event calendar is the Gäubodenvolksfest. The agricultural festival founded in 1812 has developed into the second largest folk festival in Bavaria. In 1812, the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph "most graciously" granted the people of Straubing permission to hold an agricultural festival in the "Lower Danube District". Over the course of two centuries, this developed into Bavaria's second largest folk festival. Incidentally, the word “Gäuboden” refers to the level, flat land (“Gäu”) south of the Danube, whose fertility comes from the loess soil. The Gäubodenvolksfest is “a piece of paradise” , as local poet Max Peinkofer once put it. Around 27,500 seats in seven marquees await the expected 1.3 million visitors from all over the world. 130 attractions and spectacular rides provide fun, culinary delights, entertainment and thrills every year. An extensive supporting program with around 60 cultural and sporting events accompanies the Gäubodenvolksfest throughout its entire duration. The so-called “5th season” in Straubing is ushered in every year with the traditional procession to the festival grounds on the first Friday in August.
